Florian Okwu is an multinational sculptor from Los Angeles, CA. His sculptures call to
ancient relics, imagined deities, and husks of once living beings: Testaments to mortality, forgotten civilizations, and the passing of time. He explores the human condition through form-making, expressed in his use of traditional materials, depictions of corporeal bodies, and a working process that bridges his modern artistic identity with that of craftspeople from times past.
Florian’s aesthetic decisions are shaped from his interests in anthropology, ancient architecture, burial rituals, symmetric symbolism, fragility, and idolatry. He develops a personal aesthetic language, allowing him to physicialize his imagination as well as deepen his respect for, and attunement to, his humanity. His sculptures function as a kind of journal: Chaptering the milestones of his life and learnings, acting as proofs of his attempts to explore and strengthen his relationship with instinct: The innate drive to ornamentalize our lives, prove our existences, worship our myths, and imprint our identities onto the materials of a chaotic world.
These are the compulsions which inspire us to cultivate new cultures, languages, and find meaningful purpose in our lives. Florian’s work invites these urges to the surface: The subconscious dwellers who rule our passions, obsessions and fears... Above all, Florian tries to create work that makes him proud of his own humanity, and which honor the tradition of artistry.
