"Being III" is the third in the "Being" series, a collection of works in which I explore the process of capturing and creating an object's soul.
“BEING” SERIES:
I, II, III.
I, II, III.
In a subconscious way, this collection emerged in response to the preceding but ongoing "Burial" series: a set of works (2023-2024) in which I explored mortality. That collection asked me to consider the value of death, specifically by asking myself about the physical qualities of life & lifelesness, and their paralleled relationships with beauty, failure and success in the creative process. The first Being was as much an internal reaction to those morbidities as well as the inspired result of a surreal studio experience in which a sculpture, over the course of two months, truly seemed to come alive: a distinctly separate entity from myself which held its own air in my dreams, becoming an observer to its own making-process and developping soul.
There was something about that experience which strongly drew me into my work, as it contained an honest discovery and truth to what I believe my artistic process is meant to achieve. I enjoy these corners of the mind, this ability to birth meaning, sometimes unintentionally, which must then be wrestled with, submitted to, imposed on... The sculptures of this series hold presence in a way that I appreciate immensely, and create a sacred kind of atmosphere which demands both respect and wariness. Its these fundamentally opposed reactions that I strive to produce in this series: to indulge in the sense that, as much as they are to be enjoyed, each piece deserves distance and to be treated not as inanimate carvings but as beings which possess a personal space, and respected as we might another living creature.
